Japan has been taxing older cars forever... that's why the're cheap to import here to Canuckistan. You miss the point that the Europeans have grasped, however...

Diesel.
Simple. Great fuel economy, less pollution with efficient motors, fantastic torque, lots of engine and chassis variety. We North Americans have been led to believe by the marketing forced du jour that diesel engines are stinky and noisy. This has been proved completely wrong by what BMW, Mercedes, Renault and Audi have been bringing consistently to market for years. And we keep hoping for something to save the precious gas engine. It's done already. Won't happen for the Zeds, but that's not a current issue for these cars.
Keep your Smart Car (never offered in the US as a diesel, as they were up here... although still a jellybean) I'll take whatever Audi is ramping up for... great potential there.
